Reading Curriculum Structure
Students progress through phonics, fluency, then comprehension. Reading comprehension development is crucial; however, our students are also required to master Georgia Milestone lessons. Therefore, students study milestone material all year round; not just during testing time. The continual completion of milestone lessons has resulted in better scores and a reduction of anxiety for both parent and student. A combination of one-on-one and independent study is applied based on your child's understanding of the material. Click here to view FLC reading curriculum structure.

The Science of Measuring Reading
Measuring a student's reading is a necessity to ensure the student is reading the appropriate level books, and whether emphasis should be placed on phonics, fluency, or comprehension. FLC uses multiple tools to assess students' reading development, including oral reading, reading modeling, and online tools. To help you, as the parent, to understand your child's development at FLC versus what your child's school has report as their level of development, we use the same assessment models and software that is used in Gwinnett County schools. Therefore, when comparing FLC reading levels and your child's reading level assigned by their school, you are comparing apples to apples.
