Frequently Asked Questions
-
How long is the program? The length of time students attend Foundation Learning varies. It depends on the goals of the student and parents and whether a student is enrolled for remedial or enrichment purposes. Since each student progresses at their own pace, length of time for attendance can vary from 1 year to longer.
-
Will my child learn in a one-on-one or in a group setting? All early learners receive two-on-one. As your child learns new concepts, one-on-one instruction will be provided to ensure understanding. However, to foster self-reliant learning, as students are completing assignments to improve learned concepts, they will work on their assignments independently, still maintain a 4:1 student tutor ratio. Repetition and manipulatives will be used to improve understanding of concepts.
-
Does Foundation Learning provide test preparation?Although we provide techniques to improve test taking, Foundation Learning does not provide specific test preparation. However, beginning with 3rd grade, students are given milestone testing material throughout the year. Also, because your child actually master concepts and is required to complete assignments within a specified time period, test taking anxiety is reduced, which can lead to improved test scores.
-
How often will my child attend Foundation Learning?Students attend Foundation Learning two times per week (Tuesday/Thursday). Your child will be at the center for approximately an hour, if enrolled in one subject, or approximately 90 minutes if enrolled in math and reading per class period.
-
Will my child be assigned homework?Yes, your student will be required to complete assigned homework 3-4 days at home. The benefits of students completing work on a daily basis will increase discipline, accelerate their progress through the curriculum, and increase retention of concept. To manage homework, the number of days homework will be assigned is determined by the parent's and student’s goals. Because lesson plans are individualized and each student moves at a pace that is appropriate for them, the more days per week assignments are completed, the faster they will progress.
-
Does Foundation Learning follow the local school curriculum?Foundation Learning’s goal is for every student to master foundational concepts, develop discipline and focus, and perform math and/or reading above grade level. Foundation Learning’s curriculum is in alignment with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), which has been adapted by the State of Georgia and Gwinnett County. In addition to each student following Foundation Learning's curriculum to achieve above grade level, they will also complete online CCSS (which is also Milestone concepts) that are covered in their classrooms.
-
What grades and programs Foundation Learning cover?Students study reading levels from phonics to 6th grade reading and math levels from counting to high school algebra. If your child is a high school student and need remedial instruction to improve their foundation to handle high school math and/or reading, they can also benefit from Foundation Learning’s approach.
-
What is Foundation Learning?Foundation Learning is an afterschool enrichment program that offers additional math and reading curriculum for pre-K through high school students who need remedial or challenging instruction.
-
Will the program help my child learn concepts he/she may have missed in previous grades?Yes, a pre-entry test is given to your child to determine the best level he or she should start within the program. If the results suggest that your child should start below grade level to fill in gaps, then an individualized lesson plan will be created to get him to grade level material.
